Will I ever learn?

January 5th, 2008 at 01:18 pm

Perusing this year's tax form I see that I made a big mistake. Suffice it to say that you need to consider the consequences when you do something, ESPECIALLY something big. Do I know that? Yes. Do I always do that? No! Why not??! I sure hope Ron White isn't right that you can't fix stupid!

He is pretty funny. At first I thought his shtick was a little pretentious with the scotch and cigarette, but now he's turning into a modern classic, sort of like George Burns or Jack Benny, I think!

Not sure what the mistake was, but sometimes the IRS will forgive one-time errors, especially when you catch it yourself, explain, and swear in writing to never ever ever do it again.

Actually, scfr, more of a very stupid blunder. I didn't realize that withdrawing from my 401k for college tuition would push my income over the limit for a tuition credit. Not sure yet what it will cost me, but potentially thousands. Frown Dumb! If I had borrowed instead, I could have deducted the interest and gotten the credit BOTH! And I think the darn credit was extended for this year only! Darn, darn, darn, darn.

    Income Tax Confession:

DH and I were first married and I did the returns, it was our first year of marriage and DH was in school studying accounting. I subtracted the numbers in the wrong order, thinking we were getting a $700 tax refund. I then promptly went out and spent that $700 on a new sofa.

A very costly mistake! But I did have a nice couch after the whole things ...
