Finally someone understands me! Yay!

January 3rd, 2008 at 05:56 pm

Man, you people are a bunch of kindred souls as far as being cheap, er, I mean fiscally responsible - how refreshing! I get so tired of being Jack Benny, where everyone accuses me of being cheap! Actually, I do sort of take a page from his book and use it as my schtick. But can you believe how many people think being frugal is a BAD thing? Yes, I know, they are probably talking about being Ebenezer Scrooge, not the reasonable measures taken by most of us here. Anyway, thanks for understanding!

But that's only half the equation, and I definitely need help on the investing side, since I am one of those people who wishes I didn't have to deal with money. Plus investing has always seemed too Las Vegas-like for my tastes. Anyway, I am sure you will help me improve.

    Dear Jack,

ummm... I mean Ralph, I felt the same way upon coming across Saving Advice!! Wow - here's where the other of my species hangs out!

On investing, yes, it can feel rather gamblish, but some self-prescribed reading can help you feel better about it, and some automated investing program can get you over the hump of always having to deal with it. Most brokerages nowdays have it where you can 'Set It and Forget It.' Or at least until you do a yearly 'realignment' of your
    asset allocations.

Ralph: We have all been there. This is the place where you see like people dealing with finances the same way you do. You realize that you aren't crazy.

Just recently, my younger son was discussing with his brother the concept of having to put a car on credit. I chimed in and said that if people just saved that money every month after the car was paid off, that they could pay for a car in cash in the future. My son said, you are a rare breed Mom. I don't know anyone who can do what you do. I said and I know a lot of people who do just as I do. It all depends on who we want to hear and who we hang out with. This site validates your own thinking and the proof is in the pudding. Just hang in there.

I was just thinking about this the other day. There is definitely a stigma against frugal people that you are cheap and schisty if you don't blow money every chance you get.

...if you're not spending you are either considered cheap or ((gasp)) poor!

Of course there is a stigma. The first thing that most say is that they don't have the time to do the things that you do, although they still have the same 24 hours that you do. Some don't like using coupons in front of other people. That looks cheap to them as well. In short, they aren't willing to do what we do. Most feel like they would rather earn the bigger money rather than to do what we do.

People think I am weird too for saving my money!! As my mother use to say, "I just laugh all the way to the bank" Hey, this is a fun hobby to have!!!!!

I agree. I don't talk about my hobby (couponing) to my friends. Some of them are financially struggling, but I know they will just laugh at me, or won't take any action. You know, that's why they're struggling. We know it, but they don't see it. It's much more fun to talk about how to save money and have fun than how broke we are.

Ahhh, now I know why people in this forum are so nice. Because most of you are not financially stressed, or have goals to work on. We have a saying in Japan, "Riches don't fight." When people have no financial worries, they're happier. Even when they get into trouble, they have enough money to solve the problem.

So, we should be happy to be called "cheap" I guess LOL

    Maismom, to respond to this:

I think there are a lot of people like me that ARE financially stressed, and we came here in desperation. But thank goodness that you long time practitioners of financial sanity are here to help us. I plan to bore you all with all the reasons I wound up in this boat, but only as a way of trying to deal with my problem. That river in Egypt (De Nile) has just killed me for quite a few years now!

Well, I am struggling myself as well....

However, having support on this has been so uplifting that I do what I can to help preserve and contribute to it.

And thus, I behave. Big Grin
