Cell phone rant!

January 3rd, 2009 at 01:01 pm

Man, these things are a budget killer! So I wonder what people gave up for this new toy? I know, I'm very late to the party, they have been de rigeur for YEARS now, but it still makes me mad to pay for them for the family. Of course them all getting new phones right at Christmas time didn't help. Arghhh.

But I wonder, what has been given up for these things? Probably savings. Frown

I left mine in Reno at my oldest daughter's house after spending Christmas there. It will be a week tomorrow and honestly I have not missed it. My husband will be picking it up next weekend when he helps OD move into her new house.

We just got new ones right before the holidays. We do not have texting, call waiting, voice mail, none of the extras so our bill is not that much. I got my first one over 10 years ago because I did some traveling for my company and did not like being out on the road in case of breakdown, etc. Now it is used mainly to locate my DH in the grocery store. Could we ever give them up? I wish but they are a part of us now. We no longer have a landline.

I have a very basic plan, that has actually saved us money on long distance calls. My plan has 300 anytime minutes, and unlimited weekend calls. No roaming charges. It is $29.99 a month, plus taxes. I used to have rather high long distance calls, because many friends and our families don't live nearby. We don't text message, and don't have all of the "bells and whistles".

I hear your pain. My 18 year old pays for his own cell phone plan. I share a plan with my 14 year old (85.00+ tax) with 700 minutes and 250 text messages for him. I hate paying for this bill and resolved that when the contract ends I'll go with a pay as you use phone. My son said I can add his brother's phone to his (they never use the minutes but they text alot) and I'll give him half of his bill. I think I'll save about $40.00 doing this. My husband does not have a cell and he's perfectly content. I use my phone to check on my youngest and emergencies only.

i have had one since i was 15 and i have always paid for the credit myself, and any new phones i have had (i have had five). phone plans a re a little different in australia compared to the US, we only pay 25c to send a text - not to recieve them which i think is very silly. i have been on a phone plan now for 2 months. it costs me $5 more a month than my previous pre-paid usage. i haven't given anything up but the lower petrol prices probably even everything out for now.
for the past year we have had a landline just for the internet, which is $75 a month shared by three people and soon to be shared by 2 people.
