Procrastination...is making me wait.

January 10th, 2010 at 04:51 pm

I REALLY need to lick my procrastination problem this year. So how about some good suggestions from you people?

It is so true - the payoff from procrastination is immediate and always good. But the payoff for hard work is delayed and not quite as certain. I do get immediate payoff from simple but critical tasks completed, ESPECIALLY when completed early, but still I find myself avoiding them. And as for the hard tasks...don't ask!

I came here because I realized by far my favorite mode of procrastination was the Internet, and at least here I can hopefully use the Internet productively.

OK, off to do some work for a while! Smile

If you find yourself needing to do a big project that's not too pleasant like at work, break it down into small, measurable, and easier-to-achieve pieces. Perhaps get a calendar or planner and make a note that you need to work on X project for two hours or a certain amount of it. When you finish a significant part or the whole project, reward yourself with a nice cup of tea, coffee, lunch out, etc. to keep momentum going for future projects. I started my current job at least 15 years behind. I am still behind, but it's a lot better than it was because I did just this.

I argree with crazyliblady...break the goal down, do parts of a project for short periods of time. What are you procastinating? Maybe we could give more specific ideas.

Read Getting Things Done by David Allen, which basically is what crazyliblady and creditcard are saying. But reading the book tells you how to do it and I found it very helpful. I reread it once in a while just to keep myself in line!

Thanks, everyone! homebody, I've read that book about 12 times! So far it hasn't taken. I do really enjoy it, so maybe the 13th time is a charm. Actually it caused me to go on email cleanup kicks, but that is a neverending job!

And I got a lot done today, but there is still an awfully lot left undone!
